NATIONAL BUSINESS WOMEN'S WEEK
SUGGESTED PROJECTS
- Combine celebrations - United Nations Day and National Business
Women's Week. Plan a program to highlight women in development,
human rights, equal educational opportunities, health care, and
other issues of interest to women worldwide. Background material,
discussion topics and program formats are available from the
UN-USA, 300 East 42nd Street, New York, New York, 10017.
- Examine energy careers for women. Present a workshop to examine
careers in the field of utility companies, power companies,
researchers, economists, geologists, and occupations related to
gas, oil, solar or nuclear power.
- Offer a community health fair. Planning the event to coincide
with National Business Women's Week would give an opportunity to
highlight the contributions of women in health care professions.
- Sponsor a panel discussion on the changing role of women in
politics. Invite women politicians, a local government teacher or
representatives of a women's political group.
- Run a workshop in management skills (assertiveness training,
negotiations, hiring) or job hunting (resume writing, networking,
career planning). Call on local managers, counselors, etc. to
participate.
National Business Women's Week (NBWW) can help spur publicity and
activity in your local community. Some of the more popular
celebrations for the week are:
- Woman of the Year
Many local organizations present a "Woman of the
Year" award during NBWW. It is a prime opportunity to
offer recognition to local women of achievement.
- Employer of the Year
NBWW also is an excellent time to recognize local
employers that are particularly responsive
to issues of their women workers.
Don't forget to request your Mayor to issue a proclamation. Only
your participation can make National Business Women's Week a
success. Use it to highlight BPW's contributions and to honor
working women.
